Q & A
What is one barrier you have overcome? How did you do it and what did you learn?
When I was a kid and teenager I did a lot of sports with my parents. As an adult I don’t want to do sports with my parents anymore. Most mentally disabled people do not do sports and I believe that`s why there are only few offers and opportunities for me to do sport. The vast majority of mentally disabled people like me needs assistance to be able to do sports. If they don’t have the necessary support and therefore can’t do sports, they lose interest in it. That`s the big barrier to overcome, not by me, not by people with mental disabilities but by society. I have learned that full participation in life for people with disabilities still has a long way to go. But I am grateful having a very committed caregiver from Lebenshilfe Salzburg (Mr. Manfred Passler) and thanks to him it is possible for me to participate in the Special Olympics. It’s great that the Special Olympics exist and that I can be part of it.
