Q & A

What is one barrier you have overcome? How did you do it and what did you learn?

I have Autism and my biggest barrier has been communicating and understanding the world. At school I hid in the library, and I didn’t have any friends. Through Special Olympics and sport, I have managed to find my way. I started with Ten Pin Bowling to be out in the community and have something to-do, I didn’t really want to mix or talk to others. I now do five sports, have learnt many new skills and achieved many goals. I have travelled to lots of placed, become more confident, filter, made lots of friends, feel accepted and I am out in the community training and competing like everyone else. Doing the athlete leadership programme really helped to give me the confidence to speak up. I enjoy promoting Special Olympics, socialising and being part of a team. I have learnt not to let barriers and fears stop me from giving things a go. to dream big, aim high and do your best, it may even take you to Italy.
